Trataka Meditation with Joanne

Pleae contact Joanne Osborn at yoginijojo@tx.rr.com or 972-898-1695 for more information.

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika defines trataka as “looking intently with an unwavering gaze at a small point until tears are shed.”

Trataka is a simple meditation practice that is one of the shat kriyas, or six cleansing actions, in hatha yoga. It is said that trataka not only cleanses and heals the eyes, but also improves vision thus eradicating all eye diseases, fatigue, and sloth.

The mind is benefitted by the kriya as well since trataka balances the cerebral cortex, which is responsible for memory and concentration. The Gheranda Samhita, which is one of three classic hatha yoga texts, states that trataka “cultivates clairvoyance and inner vision.” And Natalya Podgorny shares, “Because sight, mental discrimination, and the fire at the manipurna chakra are intricately interwoven, trataka also nourishes the subtle flame at the naval center, promoting vitality and inner health.”

This short, accessible kriya is easily incorporated into an asana and/or another meditation practice or as a practice in and of itself. In this workshop, you will be introduced to trataka in an environment where you are encouraged to ask questions and share your experience.

What is Enlightenment?

Saturday, Nov 3rd • 1-3 pm

The workshop will be led by Jordan Shafer (please see his bio below)

This will be a workshop on what enlightenment is from a Vedanta point of view. It will cover how enlightenment is knowledge, not emotion, along with the three stages of enlightmentment.  The practical use of enlightment in everyday life will be included. Questions and group participation will be invited.  A guided meditation designed to experience your whole and complete limitless awareness will be included in the workshop.

Vedanta is a profound body of knowledge on the nature of reality based in the Upanishads, which are Sanskrit text and part of the Hindu scriptures. As such, it is a proven method of Self realization and a means of Self knowledge, the purpose of which is to erase ignorance of one's true nature, the Self. It is the desire of all people to be free of limitation and only by understanding that one is the Self can this desire be realized.

Jordan Shafer

Jordan Shafer is a licensed professional counselor with a masters degree in Counseling and Development who helps people unite Western psychology with ancient traditions to enhance results. In his private practice, Jordan has created a unique combination of three counseling approaches, Nondual Wisdom, Focusing and EMDR, that are collectively very different from traditional mental health counseling. This approach to emotional well-being is one which people are finding very beneficial.

Jordan has been a serious student of spirituality for the past six years having done an in-depth study of the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now, and Michael Brown, The Presence Process. He has also attended workshops and intensives with Eckhart Tolle, Pamela Wilson, Adyashanti and Francis Lucille (Western "Direct Path" teachers) to experience their presence and learn from them directly.  Currently, he is delving into the teachings of Vedanta, an Eastern "means of knowledge", under the guidance of James Swartz www.shiningworld.com.  He is finding Vedanta to be the foundation from which all the other teachings arise and the clearest most direct path to freedom and liberation from the limited self.

Intention and Desire

Saturday, June 9 , 2007 • 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM • $35.00

Sometimes it seems that despite our best intentions we find ourselves responding in reactionary ways that frustrate us and make us wonder if we are really “making any progress” on our journey towards enlightenment. Perhaps there may even be times when we experience bouts with anger, sadness or depression that make us wonder whether the practices are working or not. In this workshop, we will investigate some practices that will help us to stay aligned with our most elevated intentions and help us begin to discover the ultimate reality that happiness is found within and not as a result of external situations and things. In addition to mudra meditation, Sanskrit chanting and scriptural study, prepare for a challenging and uplifting vinyasa asana practice.

Budakon Workshop with Cameron Shayne

Saturday, January 20, 2007 • 6:30 - 8:30 PM

The Physical Practice

The Budokon physical practice draws upon ancient and modern yogic and martial arts styles. The foundation of the budokon physical practice is precision, alignment and zen mind. All Budokon techniques are designed to explore the bodies full range of motion. The practice dances between agility, control, speed, power, balance & flow. The physical practice is divided into two themes: The Budokon Yogic Series, and the Budo Series. Both themes constantly draw from and depend on each other. The Budokon Yogic series was heavily influenced by Iyangar and Ashtanga yogic techniques and alignment. The focus is on control, calm, power and precision. These techniques are uniquely different from traditional hatha in the sense that they not only work to improve range of motion and strength, but they also explore the bodies ability to sustain another persons body weight as well. The Budokon Budo series is a combination of standing and ground techniques drawn primarily from Okinawan Karate, Gracie jiu-jitsu, and Olympic style Taekwondo. The objective of this series is to teach agility, power, focus and flow in the body and mind.

The Zen Practice

The Budokon Zen practice is seated meditation. Zen is about single minded living. Zen is about freedom from our own ideas. This practice is the foundation of Budokon and weaves its way through everything we do.

Yoga Balance Studio - Tracy Carruth

Satsang
Every 4th Wed of the month @ Yoga Balance 7:45 PM

Email Anne Macomber to get on the email list for updates on meeting times & dates. annmac51@sbcglobal.net

Satsang is the sanskrit name for “truth company” or being in the company of the wise. This will be a peer satsang with the intention to move towards an awake divine centered state.

According to several texts of yoga, it is one of the great doorways to inner freedom.

Spending time with people committed to seeing each other’s intrinsic greatness, you might be amazed to discover how enlightened we ordinary students can be.

Insight can arise through the clarity of a group as we share, explore, and grow our spiritual paths and community together.
